What is Vapi?

Vapi is a developer voice agent platform whose differentiator is provider optionality — bring your own LLM, swap TTS engines, mix transcription providers. The trade-off is configuration surface and tuning iteration. Reviewer sentiment splits sharply: teams who want explicit control rate it well, while those shopping for a fast working agent report meaningful friction.

Vapi is the closest competitor to Retell in the developer voice infrastructure tier. Its differentiator is provider optionality: bring your own LLM, swap TTS engines, mix-and-match transcription providers. The trade-off is configuration surface — reviewers report that getting Vapi tuned to a specific use case takes more iteration than competitors with more opinionated defaults.

The strongest reviewer signal is from engineering teams that have explicit model or vendor preferences (a regulated workload that requires a specific LLM, an existing TTS contract, a multilingual flow). Teams shopping for the fastest path to a working agent generally land on a higher-level platform. Compliance and SOC 2 posture have improved through 2025 and now meet expectations for most B2B buyers.

BYO LLM let us ship Claude in production same week

Verified

We had a hard requirement to ship with Claude for the reasoning layer because the cohort we were piloting with already had Anthropic vendor approval. With Vapi the swap was a config change and we were in production inside a week. Sub-second latency held up. The Discord community answered an edge case faster then our paid support tier at the previous vendor.

HIPAA paperwork came together cleanly

Verified

We needed a BAA, SOC 2 documentation, and audit log access for a hospital procurement push. Vapis compliance team delivered all three without the usual back and forth and the deal closed end of quarter. Latency on production calls has held sub-500ms for our patient-facing flows.

Reserved capacity contract solved our scaling story

Verified

Once we got past 5k concurrent calls the elastic pricing started doing weird things at peak. We renegotiated to reserved capacity which made our unit economics predictable. The team was straightforward about what the contract terms meant — no platform fee surprises after signing. Worth the procurement conversation.

Provider optionality wasn't a marketing claim

Verified

We swapped TTS providers twice during the build — first to Cartesia then to ElevenLabs — based on what our customers said about voice quality. Both swaps were a single config change. Honestly thought BYO meant 'theoretically possible after a week of integration work' but it was just true.

Dashboard wont save what you change

Verified

Two weeks in a row we had agents go to production with prompt changes that didnt actually persist. Save the change, reload the page, the old version is back. We've now built our entire config in our own infra and treat the Vapi dashboard as read-only. Platform is powerful at the API but the operator surface is shaky.

Embedded voice intake worked first try

Verified

We bolted voice intake onto our property management product as a feature for landlords. Wired up the SDK, deployed to staging, did about a week of prompt tuning, shipped to production. Customers love being able to call instead of typing into a maintenance request form.

Frequently asked questions

Buyer questions about Vapi, answered against our reviewer set.

What is Vapi best for?

Vapi is best for engineering teams with explicit model or vendor preferences. Bring-your-own LLM, swappable TTS engines, and mix-and-match transcription providers are the differentiators versus more opinionated developer-tier peers.

Why is Vapi's external review distribution mixed?

Trustpilot surfaces a meaningful concentration of 1-star reviews citing onboarding, billing, and support responsiveness. Engineering teams running it for the configuration depth tend to rate it positively; teams expecting a turnkey product report friction. Read both signals together.

How does Vapi compare to Retell?

Vapi exposes more configuration surface and provider choice; Retell ships with more opinionated defaults and lower-latency turn-taking. Engineering teams that want control pick Vapi; teams that want a faster path to a working agent pick Retell.
